Handling Stress Hormones

Whenever I happen upon an old blog post, like this one from 2005, I think WOW! How did I handle all that work stress, young children, and drunk husband (who has now been sober 9 years).

I don’t think I could do it today.

My stress tolerance is much lower, which is probably why I avoid crowds of people; it’s just too stressful. This got me thinking about stress hormones.

So, what are stress hormones?

Are they real, and do they wane with age like all your other hormones?

The answer is Yes, Yes, and Yes.

Stress hormones are chemicals your body releases when you need it. The flow chart of your personal alarm system works like this:

Stress activates ? brain who tells? pituitary to release? ACTH to the ? adrenal glands to produce ? cortisol.

This explains a lot

Caffeine, nicotine, and even alcohol produce cortisol. So, when you’re thinking a cup of coffee and a cigarette would calm you down, or a drink, you’re not wrong.

But here’s the kicker: just one, or the effects begin to reverse. And it’s all just temporary.

Well, dang.
