It’s hard to write about an election without alienating some of my readers. So, I’m not going to talk about who won or who lost, or the color of the winning team.
Instead, I want to talk about public service. The work of service that our newly elected officials have been entrusted to do.
It looks like the old guard may finally be making room for a new generation of leaders. Leaders that are younger, more diverse, and more familiar with algorithms, the Internet, social media, and AI.
After all, how can our elected officials write laws for the future if they don’t understand the world they’re writing them for?
Age discrimination, NOT
Don’t get me wrong. At my age, I understand the value of wisdom that comes from a life well lived. Though I may be slowing down, I still feel smarter than I ever have before!
But there’s something exciting about fresh eyes, new ideas, and leaders who understand not just where we’ve been, but where we’re going.
And let’s not forget the word service in public service.
Holding public office should be about serving the people, not holding on to power. It’s about listening, learning, adapting, and making decisions that will benefit generations we may never live to see.
I hope these newly elected officials, regardless of party, remember that.
Because public service isn’t about how long you can hold on to your seat. It’s about what you accomplish while you’re sitting in it.
A forever learner.
