Last week was a whirlwind of social engagements and a throwback to my twenties.
It all kicked off Thursday evening with a “Party in Blanc” hosted by the Gay Blades, a 75-year-old dance club that has been around since the 1950’s, back when “gay” meant happy and few women worked outside the home. The theme was simple: everyone -man and woman, alike- wore white and a DJ spun classic hits that we, the over-60 crowd, could actually sing along to.
The minute dinner was over, the music fired up and the dance floor was crowded with boomers shaking a tail feather. I got hot and stepped out onto the veranda to cool off, admire the Pleasant Valley Country Club’s recent renovations, and apparently missed all the action. When I came back in a woman had fainted in the middle of a Creedence Clear Water Revival song. She hit her head, passed out, and an ambulance was on the way.
Eventually, she was taken out on a stretcher and the music resumed. That’s when my husband led me back out onto the dance floor and said, “You know your old when the party doesn’t start till the EMT’s arrive.”
And that was just the beginning
Two nights later, Saturday, was no less eventful with food, fellowship, and performances at the Arkansas Repertory Theater’s fun-draiser. And on Monday we attended the glittery Met Gala fashion show right here in our very own Dreamland Ballroom.
Three big events in five days
My next event? That would be me sitting in my easy chair and watching the final episodes of Running Point on Netflix.
