Well, this is a new one

Learning about Air Quality Flags

Being a flag maker of 40+ years, I’ve witnessed a lot of redesigning of country and state flags. For instance, a few years back when all the confederate flag hullabaloo happened the southern states went through a rash of redesigns. And more recently I blogged about Utah’s newest flag design.

But this may be the first time I have seen a whole new genre of flags caused by mother nature. Hence, the Air Quality Flag product line.

  • Green = Good
Great day to be active outside.
  • Yellow = Moderate
Good day to active outside. Those who are unusually sensitive to air pollution could have symptoms.
  • Orange = Unhealthy
It’s okay to be active outside for short activities. Those with asthma should follow their action plans and keep quick-relief medicine handy.
  • Red = Unhealthy
For all outdoor activities, take more breaks and do less intense activities. Those with asthma should follow their action plans and keep quick-relief medicine handy.
  • Purple = Very Unhealthy
For all outdoor activities, recommended to stay indoors. Those with asthma should follow their action plans and keep quick-relief medicine handy.
  • Maroon = Dangerous
Stay indoors. The air quality is hazardous and a health warning has been issued for everyone. Those with asthma should follow their action plans and keep quick-relief medicine handy.

With wildfires burning across the world and air quality becoming unsafe to breath these warning flags are being flown at schools and public buildings as a reminder to mask up. Just as nautical warning flags are flown at the beach these air quality flags too serve as a flapping and waving public service message.

As the Wildfire flag season subsides, the Hurricane flag season begins.

Stay safe, my friends and readers.
