When my neighborhood was full of young adults with kids, we really blew it out for Halloween. It was a grand affair. Husband Grady provided a hayride down the street and hordes of kids trick-or-treated for candy while the adults trick-or-treated for adult beverages. It was FUN!
Today, our neighborhood has grown old. The lights are out at most houses.
Downtown Revitalization
Like our neighbors, we too turned off the porch light and went elsewhere to find the Halloween Spirit. We found it! The ghosts and goblins were haunting the streets of downtown Little Rock.
With housing prices skyrocketing, millennials all over the country, like my son, are opting for more affordable homes in downtown neighborhoods. These old neighborhoods have old trees, walkable sidewalks, and my favorite…big porches close to the street for ease of visiting and trick or treating.
For the occasion, I pulled out my old Cruella DeVille wig and donned my usual fur attire, long cigarette holder, and red lips. It’s a bit disturbing how well this get-up fits my persona and dog, which may be why my grandson could not stop staring at me. I couldn’t decide what he was thinking: “Is that my Lou Lou in disguise?” or “Wow, she really is Cruella.” Though well designed, my costume was not the best.
Best Costume

If you were to give out a best-costume award in our family, I think son Gray and his husband, Drew, who dressed as Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters, would win. Like my grandson, I could not stop staring at them. Big ol’ Drew stomping around like an ape in tights was the first thing to make you laugh, but that was not all. It was the white feather in their caps that stole the show. All night long, as they paraded around and visited with friends, their feathers turned and bobbed in unison. It was hilarious and very telling.
Wonder if you and your partner are a good match? Put a white feather in your matching caps, then just watch them.
Have FUN, my friends.
