Why I’m (Sort of) Hoping Elon Musk Goes Deaf

This is definitely a selfish thing to wish on somebody, but I can’t wait ‘til Elon Musk goes deaf.

Wait – What???

Let me explain. He is the smartest and richest problem-solver on the planet.  If anyone can fix hearing aids and revolutionize hearing technology, it’s him.

Hearing Aids are Stuck in the Past

I have been frequenting audiologist’s offices for decades. First with my mother, and more recently with my husband, Grady. Despite the passing years with tech innovations all around us, hearing aids haven’t changed much. Yes, now they can Bluetooth to your phone, which is nice for adjusting volume, but that’s about it.

They still don’t work well in crowds or where there is background noise. And Grady says when he wears them in the car, his blinker sounds like a bomb going off.

If it weren’t for how goofy they look, everyone would be wearing “hearing glasses” because they work fantastically and are cheap.

Don’t Wait Too Long

What I’ve learned through years of office visits is don’t put off getting hearing aids. Hearing isn’t just about your ears; it’s about your brain too. Synapses are the messengers that connect our ears to our brain, and if those connections go unused for too long, they can weaken or die off. Once the neural pathway fades, it’s not coming back.

Delayed treatment doesn’t just lead to worsening hearing; it can also cause speech issues like mumbling (everyone knows a mumbler), social isolation, and depression. But even more concerning, deafness has been linked to dementia, Alzheimer’s and mental decline.

A Plea to Elon (or Maybe Just Me)

For my hearing issues, I’ve been trying to wait out the aging Elon Musk, thinking the man who shoots loud rockets into the air would soon go deaf and realize how archaic hearing technology is. And then use his genius and AI skills to fix it.

But after writing this, maybe I shouldn’t wait for him any longer.
