If you haven’t already, you must make time to see the Van Gogh: Immersive Experience near you.
Time to Give Thanks
As grandma used to say, “getting old is not for sissies.” There may never have been truer words spoken.
As 2024 (the year I turned 70) comes to an end, I reflect on having survived the Big C and give thanks to the laser procedures that has slowed the progression of my glaucoma. I can honestly say I am looking forward to hitting the ground running in 2025.
I bring all this up to validate my medical marijuana card that, in my opinion, was the best medicine for what ailed me.
Back to the Future
If there is a Van Gogh exhibit near you, and you’re able, please buy an affordable ticket and try to go during the holidays. People of all ages love it, from children to grandparents. I don’t recommend going if you have been drinking because the moving visuals might make you throw up. But going straight or after an edible makes for a very enjoyable evening. This is a beautiful, mindful experience about a troubled man, so please be considerate of those around you and don’t be boisterous or come stinking like cheap weed or perfume that offends everyone’s olfactory receptacles.
What to Expect
Upon first arrival, you are offered tea, because Van Gogh loved tea. Then you enter the gallery to view his works and read his troubled biography. In the last gallery room, you go through a curtain and, like Alice in Wonderland falling through the looking glass, you enter another realm with the biggest, best laser light show I have ever seen. Quietly, you sit among others. You’re invited to stay as long as you like.
Upon leaving, you go through another curtain and out into the world again, where you have the option to pony up a little more money and take a virtual tour. It is a 360-degree, 3D visual extravaganza where you walk through Van Gogh’s paintings as an observer. This is where, if you were drinking, you might throw up. I won’t kid you, putting on the 3D goggles and disconnecting from the outside world feels vulnerable, but try and lean into it. I highly recommend it.
