Flags in the News | American Flag History & Controversies

Flags mean many things to many people. They are an emotional symbol, representing a wide range of fanaticism, evoking love, hate, union, defiance and more. Because of their strong appeal, they are often in the headlines. Much like religion, they can be used to bring people together or misused for personal or political gain.

As a service to our flag-loving history buffs, we at Flagandbanner.com have done the work and documented these newsworthy stories for decades. Our Press Center on flag news and history, dating back to 1976, is one of the longest-running archives of flag-related events, flag controversies, and flag etiquette. From flag burnings to debates over flag designs and displays, history shows that these conversations are nothing new. And this September has been no exception.

If you’re asking about my personal stance: I believe in no “cancel culture” or “censorship” of any kind from anybody; and that includes flags.

As I used to say when I sassed my mother, “It’s a free country”.
